  • Most fearsome medical treatments

Posted on May 6, 2012 2:42 pm by Johan

I have a more than healthy interest in medical procedures. When I have something or hear from somebody having some sort of serious illness I read up on it. Most stuff is just interesting, but some treatments cause me to fear and respect medicine. Here are some of the treatments I will hopefully never need:

(please note, I am not a doctor, consult one for official opinions on these procedures)

    Heart transplant

A heart transplantation is performed when a heart is no longer able to support the patients body. The new heart is harvested from someone who has recently deceased and is kept on artificial circulation to keep the heart in good condition. When the surgery is near, the heart is stopped and put on ice. The patient is put on cardiopulmonary bypass which means that circulation and oxygenation of the blood is done with a heart-lung machine. The old heart is removed, the new one put into its place and connected to the main veins and arteries. The heart is then restarted and from then on handles circulation in its new body. • Baerveldt implantaat, 22 dagen later

Posted on April 25, 2012 10:40 pm by Johan

    Portrait of eyes

    English summary below as usual

Let op, enigszins bloedige foto in de rest van het artikel / Warning, safe for work but slightly bloody photograph after the break

  • Easy GM tube connecting and testing

Posted on March 28, 2012 11:20 pm by Johan

Need a simple interface for connecting GM tubes to geiger counters? Use  1/4″ /6,35mm TRS sockets and plugs. It’s not what these plugs and sockets were designed for but it works nice. I use the tip as positive, ring as return and sleeve for ground. Two wires are sufficient to connect geiger tubes but the sleeve is connected to the ground of the circuit and to the shield of shielded cabling. You can also solder geiger tubes directly to the plug, I have done this with a SI-29BG tube and it works fine. Continue reading → Post ID 1054

  • Basic scintillation setup

Posted on March 17, 2012 6:29 pm by Johan

    crude scintillator setup

Pictured above is my recently build scintillation setup. Scintillation detection is detection of radiation by means of a material that emits small pulses of light when struck by radiation. Most scintillation setups consist of a scintillation crystal, most often thallium doped potassium iodide, NaI(Tl) and a photomultiplier tube (PMT).

The PMT is a very sensitive sensor which converts light pulses into electrons.  These electrons are multiplied by putting a high voltage across the cathode, a number of auxiliary electrodes called dynodes and the anode. The result is a clear pulse for each detected photon emitted by the scintillation crystal. Continue reading → Post ID 1054

  • Eye/Oog update: Baerveldt implant(aat)

Posted on March 17, 2012 5:05 pm by Johan

    English summary below as usual

Continue reading → Post ID 1054
