  • Some rad links…

Posted on August 1, 2012 7:44 pm by Johan

Below are some interesting links about radiation (detection) that I have collected over time:

  • GS-1100A2 teardown and review

Posted on May 12, 2012 8:58 pm by Johan

The Australian company Bee Research offers the Gamma Spectacular USB powered scintillation probe bias supplies with integrated preamplifier and audio output. With this box, a scintillation detector and the excellent free PRA software it is possible to perform some basic gamma spectrometry far cheaper than obtaining a multichannel analyser, which usually cost thousands of dollars/euros.

I bought one of these from a  Yahoo groups Gamma spectrometry member out of curiosity. What’s in this little box? Continue reading → Post ID 1080

  • Easy GM tube connecting and testing

Posted on March 28, 2012 11:20 pm by Johan

Need a simple interface for connecting GM tubes to geiger counters? Use  1/4″ /6,35mm TRS sockets and plugs. It’s not what these plugs and sockets were designed for but it works nice. I use the tip as positive, ring as return and sleeve for ground. Two wires are sufficient to connect geiger tubes but the sleeve is connected to the ground of the circuit and to the shield of shielded cabling. You can also solder geiger tubes directly to the plug, I have done this with a SI-29BG tube and it works fine. Continue reading → Post ID 1080

  • Arduino/Cacti Geiger counter update

Posted on September 6, 2011 8:22 pm by Johan

My online geiger counter which I described earlier has been offline for some time. During that time I experimented with a standalone Arduino with the goal of making a dedicated board for the setup. I have now completed the board shown in the picture below.

In the picture you can see the HV generator on the top of the board, on the lower left the Arduino standalone parts along with a MAX232 as a level converter for easy serial hookup and on the right two tubes connected in parallel, a SI-29BG (beta and gamma) and a SI-12B for added alpha sensivity. Also shown are the USB>Serial adapter and a separate USB connector to provide 5V to the board. Continue reading → Post ID 1080

  • Opportunism

Posted on April 21, 2011 11:23 pm by Johan

With the developing nuclear disaster in Japan, I discovered that there is lots of money being made selling geiger counters. Prices of geiger counters on Ebay and various other places seem to have tripled instantly.

Well, you could say that’s the free market in action. But it wouldn’t surprise me if prices are driven up by people not actually needing geiger counters but buying them anyway out of fear while they are not likely to experience any effects of the disaster.

Today I saw something much worse, some German on Ebay trying to sell a “geiger counter” which actually is a high range survey meter, a CDV715 according to the picture. Continue reading → Post ID 1080
